Media Monitor Reaches
20,000 Member Milestone
Toronto, July 23, 2008 —
HonestReporting
Canada (HRC), a non-profit media monitoring organization headquartered in
Toronto, has announced the growth of its subscriber base to a remarkable 20,000
members across Canada.
“Since our
inception in 2003, we have worked with our members across the country to secure
hundreds of apologies, retractions, and revisions from Canadian news outlets,”
said Mike Fegelman, Executive Director of HonestReporting Canada.
“By contacting the media directly in support of fair
and accurate news coverage of Israel, our members have the media's coverage of
the situation in the Middle East for the benefit of all Canadians.”
HonestReporting
Canada subjects Canadian news reporting to rigorous and methodical investigation
in order to prevent distorted coverage. The organization also builds
relationships with the media, educates them on substantive issues, and holds
them accountable to professional standards of journalism. The organization’s
members across the country act as “media patrollers,” monitoring local media
outlets, notifying HonestReporting Canada of lapses in accuracy or fairness, and
complaining directly to the news outlet involved.
Some of
the organization’s recent successes include securing an
on-air correction on CBC TV, a
retraction in the Journal de Montréal, and an
apology in the Montreal Gazette.
